Abstract

The semiclassical approximation for Heisenberg time evolution is developed with emphasis on the role of symplectic area phases. The WKB expansion is shown to be intimately connected to the geometry of classical phase space trajectories and the symplectic structure underlying quantum mechanics. Explicit formulas relating quantum phases to classical symplectic areas are derived.
