Abstract
We present an S-matrix approach to Glauber theory based on an eikonal-Hamiltonian formalism. The variant of Glauber's multiple diffraction theory obtained here is rigorously unitary. The construction of the approximate composite scattering amplitudes requires only two-body phase shift data. The basic idea is to replace the asymptotic Hamiltonian by an eikonal Hamiltonian, leading to all principal results of Glauber theory while making manifest the extensive internal consistency present in the theory.
